Walker double highlights Jamaican wins at NCAA Indoors
Led by a double success from Shenese Walker, Jamaican athletes notched five wins on Saturday, the final day of competition at several NCAA Division 1 Indoor Conference Championships across the United States.
Competing for Florida State University at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in Boston, Massachusetts, Walker continued her hot indoor season form after capturing wins in the women's 60m and 200m finals. In the 60m, she clocked a meet record 7.13 seconds, then posted a personal best 22.98 seconds in the 200m.
Former Hydel High hurdler, Oneika Wilson, competing for Clemson University, also picked up a win at the meet, taking the women's 60m hurdles in 8.12 seconds.
Triple jumper Shantae Foreman of Clemson was also a winner at the meet, as the former St Jago High athlete registered a winning mark of 13.20m in the women's triple jump.
There were also three second-place finishes at the meet for other Jamaicans in Kimieka Smith, Despiro Wray and Sharvis Simmonds.
Smith, formerly of St Jago High and competing for Clemson, took second in the women's shot put with a personal best 16.90m.
Former Kingston College (KC) thrower Wray, competing for Florida State University, was second in the men's shot put with a personal best 18.38m. Former Excelsior High hurdler Simmonds, competing for Clemson, was a third-place finisher in the men's 60m hurdles in a personal best 7.65 seconds.
Former Edwin Allen High hurdler Tonie Ann Forbes, competing for Texas Tech University, picked up the fifth win on the day by a Jamaican. Competing at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas, she produced a personal best 7.91 seconds to win the women's 60m hurdles.
Also at the same meet, there were second-place finishes for former St Jago High hurdler Demario Prince, and third for former KC quarter-miler Shamar Uter.
Competing for Baylor University in the men's 60m hurdles, Prince clocked a personal best 7.40 seconds. Uter, competing for Texas Tech University, clocked 45.59 seconds in the men's 400m.
Two Jamaicans, Denae Nembhard and Dejanea Oakley had second-place finishes at the South East Conference (SEC) Championships at Bryan-College Station in Texas. Nembhard, formerly of St Jago High and competing for University of Auburn, clocked 7.92 seconds in the women's 60m hurdles. Oakley, formerly of Clarendon College and representing the University of Georgia, stopped the clock at 51.21 seconds in the women's 400m.
